Aims and Objectives

Here is an overview of what UCC Atheists is about and what the Society hopes to achieve.

This list is a guide and the Society will always be open to expanding its ideas in terms of events, be they once-off, regular or annual.

What are the aims of UCC Atheists?

  • Provide a focal point for atheists in UCC.
  • Organise events of interest to atheists.
  • Raise the profile of atheists.
  • Support atheists in UCC.
  • Encourage understanding of atheistic philosophy and secular critical thought.

What events does UCC Atheists plan to hold?

Regular events (weekly/fortnightly), a selection of the following:

  • Regular guest speakers to talk on subjects relating to atheism.
  • Discussion groups on atheism and religion in society and the opinions of members on the latest goings-on. Will have a certain title – e.g. “Is there such thing as the ‘new’ atheism?” or “Is morality innate?” – and floor will be open for members to share their thoughts.
  • Workshops; e.g. “Religion-free education in Ireland”, “Supporting secular charities”, “Reactions to atheism – going public with your beliefs”.
  • Debates – e.g. “is faith rational?”, “is Ireland truly secular?”, “has science made god redundant?”
  • Video presentations – films and documentaries relating to atheism and religion.
  • Social nights for atheists.

Annual events:

  • Themed week on atheistic culture.
  • Annual dinner.
  • Trips to AGM of Atheist Association of Ireland and Darwin Day lecture in TCD.
